Sustainability

Third and fourth-grade students at Spencer-Van Etten Elementary recently participated in a compost and sustainability presentation led by Board of Education member Rick Rogers.

Rogers, who has volunteered with the district’s food composting program for more than 10 years, spoke to students about what compost is and how it supports plant growth. As part of the presentation, students had the opportunity to plant their own bean seeds using a mixture of compost and soil.

In addition to learning about composting, students observed the food waste collected in the school’s blue bins before it is transported to the compost pile located at the high school. The activity supports the district’s ongoing sustainability efforts and provides students with hands-on environmental education.

The composting program is part of S-VE’s broader commitment to reducing waste and promoting sustainable practices in schools.
