Students in Mrs. Wixted’s 11th Grade English class recently presented proposed policy changes to district leadership during a classroom presentation focused on civic readiness, research and public speaking.
The presentation gave students an opportunity to share researched ideas and perspectives on topics impacting the high school experience. Students presented their proposals to High School Principal and Superintendent Patrick Patterson while classmates observed and participated in discussion.
Presentation topics included enhancing elective course opportunities, restroom upgrades, refining attendance and tardy policies, and exploring the benefits of e-readers in education.
Throughout the project, students conducted research, developed evidence-based arguments and practiced professional presentation skills before sharing their recommendations with district leaders.
The activity connected classroom learning with real-world civic engagement by encouraging students to examine school-related issues, communicate their ideas and participate in constructive discussion.
District leaders listened to student feedback and engaged with presenters by asking questions and discussing the reasoning behind each proposal.
The project also provided students with experience in collaboration, critical thinking and public speaking while reinforcing the importance of student voice in school communities.
Mrs. Wixted guided students through the research and presentation process as part of the class’s work focused on civic readiness and effective communication skills.
School officials praised the students for their preparation, professionalism and willingness to thoughtfully engage in conversations about improving the student experience at Spencer-Van Etten High School.
