Seventh-grader Maddy Gentile scored a career-high four goals to lead Spencer-Van Etten/Candor to an 8-0 win over Newark Valley on Senior Night in Section IV field hockey action.
“Tonight was a must-win for us in order to make sectional play,” said SVEC head coach Abby Gentile. “We controlled the ball really well and took advantage of scoring opportunities. We were celebrating our lone senior, Kaylee Kastenhuber, tonight, and the team stepped up to help her get a win on Senior Night.”
Junior Kendall Gentile scored two goals and recorded one assist, while sophomore Hayden Gehres added one goal and one assist. Eighth-grader Rylee Silvernail also scored her first varsity goal in the fourth quarter to extend the lead.
SVEC scored three times in less than three-and-a-half minutes in the first quarter, with two goals from Maddy Gentile and one from Kendall Gentile. The Eagles continued to build on their lead throughout the game, taking a 4-0 advantage at halftime and closing out the regular season home crowd with an 8-0 victory.
