Spencer-Van Etten Central School District honored its 2025 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees during a ceremony held Sunday, July 13. The event welcomed approximately 100 guests, including former athletes, coaches, families, and community members.
The ceremony recognized both individual and team contributions to S-VE athletics. This year’s team inductees included the 1967 basketball team and the 1974-75 wrestling team.
The 1967 basketball team were Section IV champions. Team members included Mike Berkley, Robert Bowen, Jeffrey Matta, Wayne Myers, Irvin Nash, James Possinger, Arnold Ridesick, George VanRiper, Martin Coakley, Gary Decker, Joe Huhta, Robert Johnson, Dennis Toyryla and Richard VanDerpoel.
The 1974-75 wrestling team earned four IAC titles, five Class C titles, and five S-VE Christmas Tournament championships. Team members included Oscar Reynolds, Robert Eddy, Timothy Frandsen, Don Bower, Kenneth Smith Jr., Jeffrey Biamonte, Paul Welytok, Daniel Harvill, Hugh Reynolds, Richard Davis, Joel Gallow and Donald Marshall.
Four individuals were also inducted into the Hall of Fame:
Bill Bryant, recognized for his coaching career in football, basketball and track at Spencer-Van Etten. He joined the district in 1979 as a physical education and driver education teacher.
Joan VanRiper, a 21-letter varsity athlete, known for her versatility and leadership. She also sang the national anthem at multiple athletic events and received an invitation to perform at states.
Margaret Childs, who coached multiple girls sports and led her field hockey team to sectional and regional titles. She helped develop student-athletes both on and off the field.
Otto Huhta Jr., who served as a coach and educator from 1959 to 1971. He led football, basketball and track teams and was recognized for his commitment to education and athletics.
The evening included a guest address from S-VE Coach Joseph Darrow and presentations by past and current staff and alumni.
The district congratulates all 2025 inductees and thanks the community for its continued support of S-VE athletics.
