The Spencer-Van Etten Wildlife and Conservation class recently visited Eric at Wagner Lumber, part of the Baillie Lumber Co., in Owego as students wrapped up their forestry unit. The visit offered students firsthand exposure to the full lumber-processing operation, allowing them to observe each step from log intake to cleaning and preparation for use.
During the visit, students toured both the lumber yard and the mill. They watched the movement of materials, learned about processing equipment, and gained an inside look at how raw logs are transformed into usable products. The experience connected classroom learning with real-world applications and helped deepen students’ understanding of the forestry and agricultural industries.
“It was very educational and helped me realize how many different processes logs go through as they are prepared for use. Eric was very intelligent and explained things in a way that was easy for me to understand and comprehend. It broadened my horizons on the forestry industry and what it takes to succeed in that side of agriculture,” said junior Emariella Merical.
The visit also supported S-VE’s commitment to fostering community connections and expanding student experience through meaningful, career-focused opportunities. By engaging directly with industry professionals, students strengthened their understanding of the diverse career paths available within agriculture and natural resources.
The district plans to continue this partnership and looks forward to returning to Wagner Lumber next year.
