The Spencer-Van Etten Middle School Mathalon teams competed this weekend against schools from across Tioga County, showcasing their math knowledge and teamwork during the annual competition held at Waverly High School.
Both fifth- and sixth-grade teams represented S-VE in the event, which challenges students through a series of math-focused activities designed to test problem-solving skills, collaboration and academic readiness.
The sixth-grade team earned a third-place finish, receiving prizes for their performance. Team members included Lyla Horton, Luna Miller, Ada LaCombe, Jimmy Tucker, Niko Delaney and Rowan Leonard, with Chase Frisbie and Ashton Sager serving as alternates.
S-VE’s fifth-grade team also delivered a strong showing, narrowly missing a podium finish with a fourth-place result. Team members included Bentley Wittig, Alex Hudak, Alexandria Mint, Kayla Rositzke, Tulsi DiBoun and Devin Decker, with Emma Stanton serving as the alternate.
Middle school teachers Pam Brock and Dana Alison coached both teams, supporting students as they prepared for and competed in the Mathalon event.
District officials praised the students for their dedication and effort, noting that events like Mathalon provide valuable opportunities for students to challenge themselves academically while representing their school community.
