Career day

Students in grades 7–12 at Spencer-Van Etten Central School District participated in a half-day program focused on career exploration and life skills.

Students attended three to four presentations led by community partners, including 11 Spencer-Van Etten graduates, who shared information about their careers and offered guidance. Presenters discussed their professional paths, daily responsibilities and advice for students considering similar fields.

Following the presentations, middle and high school students participated in separate sessions. High school students took part in “Adulting 101” workshops led by district staff, where they learned skills such as sewing, basic car maintenance, tying a tie and how to search and apply for jobs.

Students in grades 7 and 8 attended sessions focused on scheduling for the upcoming school year and learned about high school opportunities, including BOCES programs and dual enrollment courses.

Several presenters shared specific advice with students. Sarah Barton, Class of 2021 and a registered nurse at Arnot, emphasized the importance of job shadowing and early exposure to careers. Brian Gillette, Class of 2019 and a physician assistant at Guthrie, encouraged students to consider work-life balance when choosing a career. Camrin Deprimo, Class of 2021 and an apprentice with U.S. Local 81, discussed the benefits of apprenticeship programs.

Brock Smith, Class of 2020, and Lucas Kastenhuber of Spencer Paving Company also provided a demonstration for students using equipment in the school’s back parking lot.

District officials thanked all volunteers and community partners for supporting the event.
