Spencer-Van Etten Central School District high school students recently had the opportunity to apply their classroom learning in a real-world setting by partnering with elementary teachers and students.
As part of Ms. Peter’s Foundations of Education course, students completed a unit focused on developing lesson plans. After learning the key components of effective instruction, students created their own lessons and visited elementary classrooms to put their work into practice.
During the visits, high school students led lessons centered around the book “Magical Yet.” They read the story with elementary students and facilitated discussions and activities focused on the book’s message of growth, patience and self-confidence.
The experience provided high school students with hands-on teaching opportunities while also engaging younger students in meaningful conversations about perseverance and believing in themselves.
District officials said the partnership reflects the value of experiential learning and helps students explore potential career paths in education while building connections across grade levels.
